Professional Development

As a Visual Art Educator, it’s my observation that the traditional studio Art Class is evolving and changing due to increased class sizes, continual budget cuts and occupational demands. It’s critical for my discipline and curriculum to meet the changes in educational needs.  The integration of technology in visual arts is a key element in keeping my curriculum current and relevant. 

 

Integrating technology into my Visual Arts curriculum requires methodical consideration of important tools such as using the internet for research, using videos as a demonstration tool, using primary sources and using internet games and webquests as a teaching tool.  In the Visual Arts, there are some areas of disciple such as graphic design that naturally require an increasing use of technology and current design programs. However, with careful consideration, I found that technology can also be effectively integrated into a disciple such a drawing by using demonstration videos.  The drawing demonstration video below is an example of a relevant instructional video.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Some of challenges that come with integrated technology in Secondary Visual Arts curriculum are making sure sources are reliable and relevant, making sure students understand and follow copy right laws with regard to using images and developing the appropriate balance between authentic skill development and reliance on technology for design purposes. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Perspective drawing is a subject many students need extra help with and more time to work on. This video is a tool students can refer to repeatedly during the course of the assignment. In addition, students can access the video from home for extra help. 

The stylus drawing table is a wonderful tool for drawing but cannot substitute authentic drawing skills. It's important to know when to introduce these tools. Technology should not replace critical thinking and judgment skills.
